The River of Lakes Heritage Corridor received its official designation as a Florida Scenic Highway on February 18, 2009!!! Read more about this prestigious designation here. Collectively, the 120-mile River of Lakes Heritage Corridor Scenic Highway and its resources convey the unfolding of western Volusia County's rich cultural heritage along the magnificent and historical St. Johns River. The northern sections along US 17, CR 3 and SR 11 speak to the region's pre-settlement and early days, preserved in natural areas, pastures, citrus groves and ferneries upon which the first economies were based. The
Post World War II development spreads outward from the urban cores of DeLand, Orange City and Deltona and fills much of the southern sections of the Corridor. Yet precious vistas still remain, such as Enterprise-Osteen Road, characterized by a mature tree canopy shading the road that travels along the northern shores of Lake Monroe and through the historic town
of Enterprise. SR 415 that travels through Deltona and Osteen traverses a spectacular and rare wet prairie ecosystem that abounds with wildlife and blazes with colorful wildflowers. CR 4139 and Cassadaga Road meander through the charming historical communities of Lake Helen and Cassadaga. Dirksen Road in DeBary leads to several city and county parks and DeBary Hall Historic Site.
The primary roadway that identifies the Corridor is US 17 and US 17/92 beginning at the Putnam/Volusia County line and proceeding south through the towns and cities of Seville, Pierson, Barberville, DeLeon Springs, DeLand, Orange City, and DeBary to the bridge crossing the St. Johns River at Lake Monroe. To include valuable intrinsic resources, many feeder roadways were included to connect the communities of Lake Helen, Cassadaga, Osteen, Samsula, Enterprise and Glenwood. - CR 3 runs parallel to US 17 from just above Pierson south to DeLeon Springs. - Grand Avenue (CR 4053) connects DeLeon Springs to Glenwood and DeLand. - New York Avenue (SR 44) runs through the heart of DeLand from the St. Johns River Bridge to Prevatt Ave. just east of I-4. Continue east on SR 44 to visit the community of Samsula. - CR 4139 leads south off of East New York Avenue through Lake Helen, then the Corridor turns west onto Cassadaga Road in Cassadaga.
- Old New York Avenue (CR 4110) takes you south off of West New York Avenue to Hontoon Road (CR 4125) and then Hontoon Road runs south to the St. Johns River - From US 17/92, Dirksen Drive (CR 4162) heads east through DeBary to Lakeshore Dr./Enterprise-Osteen Rd. (CR 5758) in Enterprise, then through Deltona to SR 415 which leads south through Osteen to the St. Johns River. - From US 92, SR 11 heads north to the Volusia/Flagler County line. The Corridor meets the Heritage Crossroads: Miles of History Scenic Highway on SR 11 at the Volusia-Flagler County line, and it also intersects with the Florida Black Bear Byway at SR 40 in Barberville. Additional area Scenic Highways are the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail and Florida's A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway. |
